By 1920, St Patrick’s Day was an established festival for Melbourne’s Catholics and the associated celebrations were annually reported in The Advocate. A further reflection on Interpretation
There are some things in the bible which, from a modern historical, scientific or geographic point of view, could be called “errors”. But the Scriptures were not written to give us this kind of information, but to lead us to salvation. Dei Verbum (DV) teaches that “the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching solidly, faithfully and without error that truth which God wanted put into sacred writings for the sake of salvation” (DV 11).

Liturgical services are not private functions but are celebrations of the Church, which is the ‘sacrament of unity’, namely, the holy people united and ordered under their bishops (Sacrosanctum Concilium 26).

The reforms of the Liturgy which emanated from Vatican II did not emerge in a vacuum. Before the Council Pope Pius XII had already encouraged frequent communion and the use of the Latin-English Missal for the laity which was produced at this time for the purpose of increasing active participation and understanding of the rites. He had approved various experiments in the Liturgy that were aimed at increasing active lay participation.

Popular devotions are those devotional practices that have often arisen spontaneously from the grassroots. Some of these may have been popularised and promoted by religious orders, such as the Rosary by the Dominicans, and others by individual laity wanting to deepen the faith of ordinary Catholics.
