ACCORDING to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), at 30 June 2012, there were 8000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in prison, equivalent to 27 per cent of the prisoner population in Australia. The over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system is a sad reflection on Australian society, and a challenge to all who seek to build a more just society.
