Days in the Dioceses
Melbourne announces the official route of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon (JCI) accompanied by the WYD08 Message Stick to Melbourne on 25 April 2008. The Cross and Icon and the Message Stick will arrive at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Anzac Day when Melbournians will welcome these universal symbols of peace and hope for a 15 day tour across the Melbourne Archdiocese.

On 5 December 2007 Days in the Dioceses Melbourne launched the volunteer program ‘TEAM DID08’ for 2008’s World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations in Melbourne. The Days in the Dioceses Melbourne volunteer team were all revved up for the big event at Telstra Dome, and to mark the occasion our aspiring WYD pilgrim hopefuls filled the stadium to create a formation on the field of play.

Tonga return

A group of 15 youths from St Agnes Parish, Port Macquarie have recently returned from a ten day exchange to Tonga. The exchange was one of 10 groups that were all part of Catholic Mission’s Youth Exchange program in preparation for the 2008 World Youth Day (WYD08) celebrations to various destinations including Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna.

Deanery launches WYD

People from across the Diamond Valley Deanery gathered at St Damian’s Church in Bundoora on Saturday 10 November for an evening Mass with Bishop Christopher Prowse. During the Mass all those planning to travel to Sydney received a special blessing from Bishop Prowse.

500,000 youth gather

 A delegation of Australians went to Italy last month to represent the Dioceses of Australia and World Youth Day to engage with the many Italians planning to come to Australian cities during WYD. It became evident from the reception received at the gathering that Australians were the VIPs of the crowd.

The Cagliero Project

The Australian and South Pacific Salesian province has recently launched an exciting new project, entitled ‘The Cagliero Project,’ after the first Salesian missionary, Bishop John Cagliero. The endeavour aims to give young people an opportunity to volunteer in an overseas or Australian mission for a year, with current focus centred on the development of volunteer sites in Samoa and Thailand. I have taken on the position of director of the project, having spent the past 18 months in Zambia as a lay missionary.

We are on countdown and there are only 300 days to go until Days in the Dioceses starts here in Melbourne!
Melbourne’s Days in the Dioceses has hit the 10,000 registration mark! Although this is an amazing milestone it is important that our local Melbournians register now to avoid disappointment. The registrations for Melbourne continue to climb but without the important ingredient of local hosts and fellow pilgrims accompanying our international guests to World Youth Day (WYD08), the event will not have the same level of enthusiasm.
