The World Youth Day (WYD)Cross and Icon were met by 2500 excited parishioners across the Archdiocese of Melbourne at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Friday 25 April. The ceremony was commissioned by Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart, who received the Cross and Icon from the Diocese of Sale in eastern rural Victoria.

In just a few weeks parishes around Melbourne will be matched to their international billeting groups for the Melbourne Stay program in the lead-up to Days in the Dioceses and World Youth Day in July. With more than 440 groups from over 65 countries coming to Melbourne the task of matching groups with the 230 parishes is like putting together a huge jigsaw puzzle.

Carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ’s love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrection of Christ we can find salvation and redemption.”

Students from more than 70 secondary Catholic schools from the Archdiocese of Melbourne are being appointed as World Youth Day (WYD) Ambassadors.
Somewhere in a factory in northern Italy, an Indigenous Australian image of the Holy Spirit is being fashioned onto the back of specially designed World Youth Day chasubles.

Days in the Dioceses
Melbourne announces the official route of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon (JCI) accompanied by the WYD08 Message Stick to Melbourne on 25 April 2008. The Cross and Icon and the Message Stick will arrive at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Anzac Day when Melbournians will welcome these universal symbols of peace and hope for a 15 day tour across the Melbourne Archdiocese.
