TRANSFORMING the former St John’s School site on Victoria Parade in Melbourne into a world-class Catholic Leadership Centre (CLC) has earned top honours in this year’s Master Builders Association of Victoria Awards, with APM Group taking out the Excellence in Construction category and overall Master Builder of the Year awards.
Executive director of Catholic Education Stephen Elder said the CLC was critical to supporting the leadership of Catholic schools.
‘Through the CLC we can help leaders engage and inspire their school communities to work together with passion and purpose,’ Mr Elder said. ‘Effective leaders understand that they too are learners, and are constant seekers of professional learning and personal reflection.’
The CLC is designed to host activities such as leadership programs, lectures and gatherings. It includes a 400-seat dining room, 45 four-star accommodation rooms, five lecture spaces, a central courtyard and cloister, and a 60-car basement car park.
In presenting the awards, the judges recognised the builders’ innovative approach to constructing pre-cast lift and stair wells in tight sections of the site. They also complimented how they tackled the challenges of the complex steelwork and ceiling in the pre-function centre, and the restoration and rejuvenation of the existing buildings.
