COORDINATOR of CatholicCare’s prison chaplaincy, Sr Mary O’Shannassy SGS, received an unexpected honour on 6 March at CatholicCare Melbourne’s International Women’s Day evening.

Sr Mary was presented with the inaugural Inspiring Woman award. In presenting the award, CatholicCare board member Ruth Webber said the committee had determined that Sr Mary was someone who lived the CatholicCare mission, was a living witness of the Church in the world through her ministry, work and advocacy, and whose daily life was inspired by Catholic social teaching.

Sr Mary said she was ‘very humbled’ by the award.‘I accept it, not as recognition solely for myself but for the fantastic team that I have in the chaplains who work in the prisons,’ she said. ‘I couldn’t do it without them. We together achieve a lot and we do advocate for those least recognised in our society—the people society doesn’t want to know about.’
