Ministry of the Word

Lector or Reader

A Lector or Reader is any member of the congregation selected to proclaim the Scripture Readings (other than the Gospel). Readings from Scripture are integral to that part of the Mass known as the ‘Liturgy of the Word.’

The Lector is responsible for effectively conveying the words of Scripture to members of the congregation. Clearly, this requires preparation, reflection, rehearsal and presentation. It also includes using aspects of public speaking that assist parish members to hear and to better understand the Sacred Readings.

Guidelines and support are available to assist parishioners in acquiring the knowledge and skills that help in the formation of an effective Lector.
Please contact the Parish Office on 9890 2231 if you require further information on the role of the Lector.

Commentator

The role of the Commentator is relatively new to the Church and the Liturgy, but nevertheless is an important ministry. The Commentator is responsible for welcoming the congregation and visitors to the mass, and later reading the Prayers of the Faithful.

The role of the Commentators requires preparation, reflection, rehearsal (correct pronunciation etc) and presentation. It is important for the Commentator to speak clearly, slowly and in a solemn and dignified way and to not rush.

Guidelines and support are available to assist parishioners in acquiring the knowledge and skills that help in the formation of an effective Commentator.
Please contact the Parish Office on 9890 2231 if you require more information on the role of the Commentator.
