Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission…(Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 1213)

The Sacrament of Baptism at St Patrick’s Cathedral is in English and begins at 3:30pm every fourth Sunday of the Month;

The number of children being baptised at any one ceremony is limited to SIX candidates.

It is customary to make an offering to the Church on the occasion of your child’s Baptism.  The stipend for Baptisms is $100 for St Patrick’s Cathedral

It is most important for Parent(s) to arrange with the Parish Office their attendance at the Baptismal preparation evening which is for an hour and is held every 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm in the Lansdowne Rooms, which is part of the Cardinal Knox Centre;(cnr of Albert Street and Lansdowne Street East Melbourne; parking available in the Cathedral Carpark, opposite the Fitzroy Gardens).

Please note that notifications for Baptisms ought to be arranged at least three months in advance and are available to families who live within the Cathedral Parish.  If you do not live within the Parish, we ask that you make contact with your own local Catholic Parish Church and have the Sacrament celebrated locally.  This will help you to become acquainted with your local Catholic Parish Community and to remember that the record of your child’s Baptism will be kept locally.

However, if there is a good and satisfactory reason why you cannot celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism in your local Parish and wish to have your child baptised here at the Cathedral, it is customary that parents contact the local parish priest who can contact the Cathedral Office to grant permission for the baptism to take place outside of the local parish.

If you decide to have your child baptised here at the Cathedral, please contact the Parish Office on (03) 9662 2233.
