The Archdiocese of Melbourne has the largest population of any diocese in Australia. Of the 4,932,423 people within its province, over one million (1,349,828) are Catholic, according to the 2006 Commonwealth Census figures. That is roughly 28% of the population. There are 219 parishes in the Archdiocese and 326 diocesan priests. The Archdiocese has a total of 261 priests in religious orders, 179 religious brothers and 1,232 religious sisters. There is one seminary for diocesan clergy, Corpus Christi Copllege, and three seminaries for religious clergy. The Catholic Education System There are a total of 330 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne: 256 primary schools, 67 secondary schools and 7 special schools. According to the February 2010 student census, there were a total of 143,033 students enrolled in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese: 74,267 in primary schools, 68,573 in secondary schools, and 193 in special schools. |
