On behalf of the Bishops of Australia, Archbishop Denis Hart recently installed the new National Executive of the Catholic Women’s League Australia (CWLA) in a beautiful and moving Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. A great chorus of women, who had journeyed from all parts of Australia in support of the new National Executive, joined with the Archbishop in prayer as he asked the Holy Spirit to enlighten the minds of the new leadership team and to guide all their actions so that they may be strengthened in faith, sustained in hope and united love.

Thousands of Australian Christians are preparing to reflect and pray together as they celebrate the milestones of unity and mission.  This year the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity takes place in the context of the 100th anniversary of the landmark 1910 World Mission Conference in Edinburgh.  Appropriately the theme for this year has been prepared for churches around the world by a group from Scotland.

Chile’s second largest city, Concepcion received an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale. To date fifty one after shocks were recorded, one measuring 6.9.

This, less than two months after Haiti’s devastating 7 magnitude quake that killed more than 200,000 people. In Chile, more than 700 people are dead, buildings and roads have collapsed.

Caritas responds to Chile earthquake Print E-mail

Caritas aid teams are being urgently deployed to Chile to assist the Caritas teams already active on the ground in Chile in the wake of the massive 8.8 earthquake overnight.

The quake struck about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion (population 300,000) and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago. Tsunami warnings have been issued across the Pacific.
