Fertility education should be right up there with pap smears and breast scans as one of the “must dos” for good sexual and reproductive healthcare, Cheryl Curnow of the Natural Family Planning Program said today.

Mrs Curnow said Natural Family Planning Awareness Week [20 – 26 August 2008] provides a good opportunity to raise the community’s awareness of the importance of fertility education for Australian women.

“This information is knowledge every woman should have.  Every woman needs to understand how to recognise the fertile and infertile phases of her menstrual cycle,” she said.

“She can use this knowledge to avoid pregnancy, without the side effects of medication or devices.  Alternatively, she can maximize her chances for achieving pregnancy, naturally.  With fertility education the choice is hers.”

“Women today are under a lot of pressure, juggling career and family commitments”, Mrs Curnow said. “They need to be able to make choices confident they are not compromising their potential to have a family.  This is what fertility education can do.

“Fertility education – along with pap smears and breast scans – is one of the ‘must dos’ for good sexual and reproductive healthcare.  It is no surprise that women hear about the benefits of fertility education from other women - women who appreciate being empowered to control their own fertility.”
