Dr Chris Hayes, who is currently Headmaster of St. Edmund’s College, Canberra, has been appointed Principal of Xavier College in Kew.

The appointment of Dr Hayes will take effect at the start of next year, following the retirement of Mr Chris McCabe who has been Principal of Xavier for more than 11 years.

Prior to his current role in Canberra, for 21 years Dr Hayes held senior teaching and administrative positions at St Ignatius College, Riverview, in Sydney, which like Xavier is a Jesuit school.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Sydney majoring in English and History, then after completing Graduate Diplomas in Education and in Religious Studies he received degrees of Master of Education and Doctor of Education at Australian Catholic University.

The thesis for his doctorate was titled: Paradoxes, Parallels and Pedagogy: A study of teachers in Australian Jesuit schools implementing Ignatian Pedagogy.

Chairman of the Xavier College Council, Mr John Ralph said that the Council was extremely pleased to have attracted such a qualified and high performing person as Principal to follow on from Chris McCabe who was retiring after a very distinguished record of achievement at Xavier College.
