Tuesday 6 May 2008
The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) has welcomed the new wages agreement between the Australian Education Union (AEU) and the State Government.
The CECV’s Executive Director, Stephen Elder, said he was pleased the ongoing dispute over wages and conditions was over.
However, in terms of a wage rise for Catholic teachers, he said the CECV had yet to see the finer details and therefore the cost to the Catholic sector could not yet be determined.
On the eve of the State Budget being handed down, Mr Elder has called for a funding increase to assist Catholic schools so they can match what teachers in government schools will receive.
Mr Elder said there needed to be an appropriate indexation of State government grants to the Catholic sector if Catholic schools were to afford these types of increases. Currently Catholic schools in Victoria are the lowest funded schools in Australia. This has been an issue that the Catholic sector has been raising with the State Government for some time, and it has now become critical.
Negotiations are continuing between the Victorian Independent Education Union (VIEU) and the Catholic sector, Mr Elder said.
