The book launch of ‘Common Ground - seeking an Australian Consensus on Abortion and Sex Education, took place in Melbourne on 17 September 2007. The book was co-edited by Dr John Fleming and Dr Nicholas Tonti-Filippini. The launch was introduced by Christine Campbell MP Member for Pascoe Vale.
In publishing a book on abortion and sex education, the editors have attempted to identify areas in which there is significant agreement within the Australian community. Whilst their research shows that Australians are clearly deeply conflicted on the abortion issue, it is heartening to discover that Australians who describe themselves as ‘pro-life’ and those who describe themselves as ‘pro-choice’ have much more in common than they may think.
This book shows us that the overwhelming majority of Australians want to see change and gives us a starting point from which to work to achieve this.
