As has been reported by media outlets the Archdiocese of Melbourne confirms that the Western Australian Police have recently laid charges pertaining to sexual abuse of minors against Fr. Allan Mithen. The charges relate to allegations said to have occurred in the period between 1965-1970 at Wandering Mission Station, Western Australia where Fr. Mithen served as a member of the Pallottines (Society of the Catholic Apostolate).
Fr. Mithen is now a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
It is understood the charges against Fr. Mithen will proceed through the Western Australian Magistrates Court. Until the period of investigation is concluded, Fr. Mithen is entitled to the presumption of innocence. There shall be no further commentary in order not to prejudice the case progressing without undue influence or interference.
The Archdiocese of Melbourne encourages those who have serious allegations against priests, religious or laypeople under its jurisdiction to report their concerns to Victoria Police in the first instance.
