Feasts and Seasons

Year A 2017 - 2018 - The Year of  Matthew's Gospel

We follow a calendar based on a cycle of liturgical seasons including feasts and saints’ days
The Church Year began on 27 November 2016, the First Sunday of Advent.  It is a period covering the four Sundays before Christmas during which we prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth.
The Christmas Season begins Christmas Day Friday 25 December 2016 and concludes on 11 January 2017.  Sunday 1 January 2017 is the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. The Epiphany is celebrated on Saturday 8 January 2017 and Ordinary Time begins on Monday 10 January 2017 ending on Shrove Tuesday 28 February 2017.
Ash Wednesday is 1 March 2017 and begins the 40 days of Lent which are a time of preparation for the Celebration of Easter. In this time of penance we try to give more depth to our prayer and grow in compassion through fasting, self-denial and generosity.  Palm/Passion Sunday is on 9 April 2017 and marks the beginning of Holy Week:
The Easter Triduum (3 days) is the heart of the Liturgical year, from the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, until Easter Sunday morning.  Holy Thursday is 13 April 2017, Good Friday is 14 April, the Easter Vigil is 15 April and Easter Sunday is 16 April.
