Archdiocese of Melbourne

The Vocations team has had a very busy year in schools. We visited 8 schools - >1250 students - in August alone. It is exciting work - the students in our schools are remarkable young people who respond very positively to the testimonies from the representatives of the different vocations and ask some really intelligent and challenging questions.

National Vocations Awareness Week will be celebrated 4-11 August 2013 in Australian churches.  The Vocations Office for the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne has developed resources to assist in promoting the vocations to single life, marriage, consecrated life and the ordained ministries.

On Friday evening, 28th July, the Vigil of the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul, Most Rev Denis Hart, Archbishop of Melbourne, ordained Rev Fr Simon Grainger to the diocesan priesthood for the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Simon Grainger will be ordained by Most Rev Denis Hart, Archbishop of Melbourne, at St Patrick's Cathedral on Friday, 28th June at 7 pm. Read his testimony.

The Winter edition of Vocations News contains articles from the Director about the Eucharist and Vocations, from Pope Francis about our relationship with Jesus and Vocations, a report of Good Shepherd Sunday and the Seminary Enquiry Day, and news about the forthcoming Vocations Retreat and the Australian Catholic Youth Festival.

Welcome Message from Fr David Cartwright, Vocations Director

Perhaps one of the most annoying things for many of us is a telephone that rings constantly.  Or perhaps it is the doorbell that rings all the time.  There is no shortage of things in everyday life that can annoy us.  Yet we may liken this insistence of a ringing doorbell or telephone to the call of the Lord to serve Him in priesthood or religious life.  A call, at some stage, demands a response – a response in faith, generosity and trust.

Perhaps you are reading this because you have experienced this ‘insistent’ (or annoying!) call from the Lord to consider a vocation as a priest or religious.

Many enquirers begin their searching at places like this – the anonymity of the website is safe and anonymous. Yet the call of the Lord is anything but. It is risky and public, and insistent because it demands a response from you. It is my hope and prayer that by your visiting these pages you may have the courage to respond in faith and trust to the insistent call of the Lord for you.

Consider religious life. Consider priesthood. Take the leap of faith !

If you want to take the ‘leap of faith’ please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you

Father David Cartwright
Vocations Director
