Travelling throughout the Archdiocese of Melbourne

The World Youth Day Cross, Icon and Message Stick will be visiting the Archdiocese of Melbourne from Friday 25 April to Saturday, 10 May 2008.

Throughout its 15-day tour of Melbourne, the Journey of the WYD Cross and Icon (JCI) will travel to parishes, schools and other key locations around the Archdiocese. Some highlights include a pilgrim walk from the MCG to St Francis Church in the city (27 April), the JCI Youth Gala at Melbourne Town Hall (3 May), and the JCI Family Fiesta in Middle Park (10 May). These events are open to everyone!

The JCI has ignited the spirit of many young people since its inaugural journey in 1984.  Pope John Paul II entrusted the youth of the world with this symbol of hope as part of the 2000 Jubilee for Youth.  The late Pope saw the Cross as a sign of Christ’s sacrifice for humanity and a sign of hope.

Since then it has become a focal point of World Youth Day and is currently making its pilgrimage across Australia to some 30 Dioceses across Australia will arrive in Melbourne on Anzac Day when our young people will gather at St Patrick's Cathedral to reflect on the incredible sacrifice made by our brave ex-serviceman, whilst welcoming this iconic symbol of hope to our great city.

Over the past 20 years has been touched and carried by millions of pilgrims and members of the public from around the world.  The Cross and Icon have assisted young people to come to terms with racial injustices, religious barriers, civil unrest and acts of terrorism.

Behold the Cross – Melbourne’s Young People will be touched by the power of these incredible symbols.
