As thousands of pilgrims make their way into Sydney for World Youth Day 2008, the G’DAY AUSTRALIA PARTY will be held this evening at Sydney University No.1 Oval as a Welcome Party for the Pilgrims of the world. Hundreds of pilgrims from over 15 countries will attend throughout the evening which will also feature:
• The International Students Mass to be held in the Sydney University Great Hall at 4pm;
• A Preview of the Jesuswalks – to be held in the Sydney University Grandstand at 6pm;
• The launch of the PAPAL PLATE WYD Soccer and Debating Competitions to be held from 7pm at the Grandstand Bar.
"The Pilgrims have arrived and in Australia there is only one way to say welcome – G’day." said Anthony McCarthy the National Coordinator of Carnivale Christi, the WYD International Young Adult Festival.
“As the world arrives, now is the time for us celebrate the best of Australian life with a BBQ, plenty of Australian and international flags and an exhibition of some Australian Rules Football.”
The evening will also feature the preliminary rounds of the Papal Plate WYD Debating Competition and a preview of Jesuswalks – a large scale public art exhibition which will run throughout WYD2008 in 10 locations across Sydney. The locations will include North Sydney, Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, Bondi and Randwick Racecourse.
“In many ways, the sports grandstand is an iconic Australian location – an ideal place to say G’DAY, launch the Papal Plate WYD Competitions and preview Jesus Walks,” continued McCarthy.
The opening topics for the WYD Debating Competition will be “That World Youth Day is an oxymoron,” and “That the youth should have a representative in the conclave.” The final of the Papal Plate WYD Debating Competition will be held on Wednesday evening at the Sydney University Great Hall with the topic to be “That God is dead.”
The Papal Plate WYD Soccer Competition will begin tomorrow at Sydney University with over 16 teams from different countries battling it out for the chance to be declared the first ever WYD Soccer Champions and holders of the Papal Plate. The final of the Soccer will be held on Thursday evening following Pope Benedict’s arrival into Sydney.
