Friday 4 July 2008
Many pilgrims are taking advantage of the global gathering of young people during World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) to hold large national and community gatherings.
From 12 to 26 July, over 30 gatherings will take place across Sydney with the largest expected to be:
- the multi-nation Neo-Catechumenal Way lay movement at The Domain (up to 25,000)
- the Lebanese Maronite community at Parramatta Stadium (20,000)
- the Italian Scalabrini community at Club Marconi in Bossley Park (15,000) and
- 12,000 from the USA, also in The Domain
An expected 3,000 French will celebrate Bastille Day on 14 July in the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, while 10,000 friends of the Franciscans will meet on Bondi Beach and 8,000 Asian youth will meet in Sydney Olympic Park.
"An international World Youth Day is a chance for pilgrims to hold large celebrations with those who belong to the same religious order or language group who would otherwise not have the chance to meet and share their faith," said Fr Mark Podesta, WYD08 spokesman.
"Take the Neo-Catechumenal Way for example. They have members in many nations across the world. At WYD08 they can all meet together in one place and celebrate their faith and their particular ‘charism’ with the founder of their movement.
"Or the French might want to celebrate in their own language, inviting French speakers to their gathering from France, Africa and the Pacific, as well as Francophone Australians. The Italians will do the same.
"Whether national or community based, these are a great way for young people to strengthen their faith and meet like-minded people at WYD08.
"Around 142,000 pilgrims will attend one or more of these national and community gatherings."
The list of large gatherings is found below. For more information visit the WYD08 website: www.wyd2008.org.

Meanwhile, some 15,000 youth from the United States and 50 of their bishops are headed to Australia for this month's World Youth Day.
Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago and president of the episcopal conference, is one of the prelates set to attend.
The youth are divided among some 1,140 groups of varying sizes, organized by dioceses, parishes, religious associations or schools. Some of the youth are going with their families.
The July 15-20 World Youth Day is the 10th international celebration since Pope John Paul II started the events in 1985.
According to the U..episcopal conference, for the first time at a World Youth Day, the conference will sponsor a Mass for all US groups in Sydney. Cardinal George will preside and deliver the homily on Saturday 19 July, at an outdoor location in the center of Sydney.
US youth will also have roles in other aspects of the Youth Day events.
Armando Cervantes from the Diocese of Orange, California, will be among 12 young adults who will have lunch with the Holy Father on Friday, July 18.
Juan Martinez from the Diocese of Austin, Texas, will receive the sacrament of confirmation from the Pontiff.
Annalee Moyer, from the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., and Leonardo Jaramillo, from the Archdiocese of Atlanta, were selected to be part of the 200-member International Liturgy Group.
Across the Atlantic, some 2,000 young people from the United Kingdom will attend the youth event.
The Diocese of Westminster is preparing 170 pilgrims for World Youth Day. That group represents some 17 nations, including the Philippines, Croatia, Hungary, India, Lithuania, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa, Singapore and Zimbabwe.
David Burke, youth minister for the Diocese of Westminster, said: "It's great to see these young people representing the length and breadth of the diocese. The enthusiasm and anticipation is huge."
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin will accompany some 200 pilgrims from that archdiocese to Sydney for the event.
