Thank you for your interest in joining the Archdiocese of Melbourne pilgrimage to World Youth Day Panama in 2019! Please read the following important information before deciding whether you would like to apply for the Melbourne Archdiocesan pilgrimage to World Youth Day.
 
The mission of the Melbourne World Youth Day Pilgrimage is to facilitate a safe and supported pilgrimage which enables young adults from the Archdiocese of Melbourne to deepen their personal faith, broaden their understanding of the Catholic Church, form enriching relationships with other young Catholics, and respond to God in their life encouraged by the words of Mary which are given as the theme for World Youth Day 2019: ‘I am the servant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.’
 
This application process includes the completion of a number of forms. These forms will help you understand the aims of the World Youth Day pilgrimage. Please complete these forms honestly to help us understand how we can support your participation in the Archdiocese of Melbourne pilgrimage.
 
There will be a limited number of places available on the Melbourne World Youth Day pilgrimage with each successful pilgrim receiving a generous subsidy from the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Full costs for the pilgrimage will be $8960 but with the Archdiocese of Melbourne subsidy it will bring the cost down to $3500 per pilgrim which includes travel insurance. 
 
Due to the pilgrimage being heavily subsidised and having a limited number of places, the Archdiocese of Melbourne will be using an application process to select pilgrims. World Youth Day can be a great time of personal and professional growth and the Archdiocese of Melbourne is hoping to take pilgrims who are open to broadening their faith to become missionary disciples and who are ready to share their joy and faith with their community at home.
Full participation in the four-part pilgrim formation program is a compulsory requirement for all pilgrims. No additional costs are required for participation in the formation program. Details HERE
 
All pilgrims should review the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Travel warnings to ensure they are fully aware of the risks involved in participating in this pilgrimage. The pilgrimage will include travel to the US, Mexico and Panama. Summaries of the warnings for each of these countries can be found HERE 
 
Pilgrims are particularly advised to review the warnings around the presence of the Zika virus in some of the areas we will visit. In particular, pilgrims who are considering pregnancy (both male and female) within the next 12 months should be aware of the risks associated to unborn children. More information about Zika can be found HERE. It is the responsibility of all pilgrims to assess the level of risk and determine whether they are comfortable to accept it. 
 
The Melbourne Archdiocese will be continuing to assess the risks involved in conducting the pilgrimage to the US, Panama and Mexico and may decide to cancel or change the pilgrimage if they are unsatisfied about the level of safety for pilgrims.

Application process
The Archdiocese of Melbourne World Youth Day pilgrimage is open to pilgrims aged 18-35 from the Archdiocese of Melbourne. All pilgrims are required to participate in the application process which will help pilgrims and the pilgrimage organisers discern if this pilgrimage is the best option. Please note, there are limited places available.

Step 2: Download and complete the following PDF forms
  • Pilgrim Referee Form. As part of the application process, you are asked to provide details of a referee. Your referee should be someone who is able to support you before and after the pilgrimage experience, and someone with whom you are comfortable sharing questions, concerns and experiences related to your faith. Appropriate referees include; Archdiocesan clergy / religious, parish leaders, Catholic education leaders, Catholic organisation leaders, spiritual directors etc.

Step 4: Your application will be reviewed by the Archdiocese of Melbourne World Youth Day Committee
You will receive notification of whether you were successful in your application or not by date. You may be contacted if further information is required.
 
Step 5: Once you are offered a place on the Archdiocese of Melbourne World Youth Day pilgrimage, you will receive further instructions to begin your registration including the payment of a deposit and the completion of a Medical Information Form. 
 
An $800 non-refundable deposit is due on 18 September to secure your place on the Melbourne pilgrimage. Please note that your place will not be held without payment of the $800 deposit. Final payment of $2700 by 30 September. 
 
Please note that teachers who have applied for sponsorship to attend WYD through the Catholic Education Melbourne are being processed separately and do not need to apply here.
