CulturED Café with Daniel Wells

As the AFL season heats up and we move closer to business end, the Archdiocesan Office for Youth was honoured to host AFL superstar, Daniel Wells, at CulturED Café. The Cathedral Room at the Cardinal Knox Centre was at capacity with over 150 people from all over Melbourne crowding in to listen to the North Melbourne star talk about faith, family and footy.

Daniel Wells shared with us the highs and lows of his illustrious career, so far spanning 212 games. From winning two Best and Fairest awards for the North Melbourne Football Club in 2011 and 2013, winning AFL Goal of the Year in 2004 with his famous ‘Jackie Chan’ goal, and captaining the International Rules Team in 2013, through to his injuries that have kept him out of the game for periods of time during his career.

Daniel gave us an insight into what it was like growing up in rural Western Australia. He spoke about his love for footy from a young age, the influence of his father and how that passion eventually evolved into a career with the North Melbourne Football Club.

Mariangela, Daniel’s wife, Tricia, his sister in law and his beautiful daughter, Laudate Angelus, accompanied him to the interview where he shared with us the role his wife played in his conversion to the Catholic faith and how fatherhood has greatly enriched his life. When asked about how he shares his faith with his teammates, Daniel said that he is not one to preach. However, he tries his best to lead by example through his actions and allow his faith to guide his decisions in life.

Daniel’s witness to his faith is an inspiration. In a society where it is rare to find a high profile figure be so open about their love for God and family, his open sharing was a beautiful testament to how God is working in his life.  When asked for some words of wisdom for young people discovering their faith, Daniel did not hesitate in responding… “Stay close to the sacraments.”

The Archdiocesan Office for Youth will host its next CulturED Café on September 11. We will be welcoming Catholic Apologist and former contestant on America’s Next Top Model, Leah Darrow.
