The 2015 Archdiocesan Office for Youth Indoor Soccer Competition
The second annual AOY Indoor Soccer Competition was a day
full of fun, laughter and enthralling competition. Twenty four teams from parishes and
communities throughout Melbourne came together at the Westgate Leisure Centre
on Sunday 21 June to battle it out for the title of the 2015 AOY indoor Soccer
Competition champion.
The mixed teams saw competitors play 10-minute games in the
preliminary rounds, with the top two teams from each group proceeding to the
quarter finals. The preliminary rounds were very close with some teams only advancing
due to higher percentage. The quarter finals and semi-finals took excitement
levels through the roof.
After a riveting 4-all draw in the final, Alive in Spirit 1,
from the Chaldean Catholic Community, took out the tournament in the extra time
‘Golden Goal’ period against runners up STAY United from the St Augustine Young
Adults group.
The Golden Boot award was awarded to the highest goal scorer
in the preliminary rounds. Ziyad Markous from Alive in Spirit 1 won the trophy
after scoring a massive 13 goals from five pool games. The Best and Fairest female award went to
Jessica Vandegarde from Aftershock Abominable Snowpeople and the Best and
Fairest Male award went to Brandon Ong from STAY United. The best and fairest
awards represent not just excellence in ability but also a great sense of
sportsmanship.
The AOY were very grateful for all the teams who supported
the event and for the wonderful spirit of the day. We look forward to continuing
the tradition in 2016!
