Team Melbourne at ACYF2015
What an amazing three days we had in Adelaide at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival! 476 Melbournians made the trek to Adelaide to join with over 3000 young people, 17 bishops and Catholic leaders from across the county.
After our Commissioning Mass in Melbourne on Sunday 29th November the group met together again on Thursday 3rd December in Adelaide for a Melbourne Gathering which included Mass, lunch and a pilgrim walk to the Festival.
The festival included five spectacular plenary sessions with music, testimonies, drama, inspirational speakers, Fr Morgan Batt abseiling from the ceiling and more. Our very own Alana O’Reilly (AOY staff member) gave her testimony in one of the plenaries and Melbourne musician Genevieve Bryant sang her winning entry in the ACYF theme song competition. In between plenaries, the young people navigated hundreds of workshops, concerts, expo spaces, games, prayer experiences and more.
The Melbourne Archdiocesan Office for Youth (AOY) stall at the INcounter expo was a hive of activity as young people dressed up as their favourite Saint and then posed for a photo. The photo booth averaged one photo every 2mins for the entire three days of the festival! Other young people enjoyed chilling out in the bean-bag cinema at the Melbourne Vocations stall or exploring the many other interesting and interactive stalls at the expo.
The Festival finished with a Vigil Mass celebrated by Archbishop Fisher and two massive announcements – Sydney will host the next Youth Festival in 2017 and the Australian bishops have decided to declare a Year of Youth in the Australian Church to commemorate 10 years since World Youth Day in Sydney. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for such an important year in our church!
