New Horizons for the Archdiocese’s latest youth leaders

Friday 2 February saw the next crop of up and coming youth leaders come together for the Archdiocesan Office for Youth’s (AOY), Called and Sent: New Horizons camp in Safety Beach. The three-day camp is designed to equip new youth leaders with the tools they need to plan and build their youth ministry. Through a series of talks, discussions and workshops, the almost 40 participants from 18 different youth groups learnt skills and took time to plan their year of youth ministry based around the guidelines and goals set out in “Anointed and Sent” the ACBC’s framework document for youth ministry in Australia.

Fr Paul Newton led our first two sessions, inspiring everyone to find joy in ministry and guiding us through his many examples of working with young people over the years. Fr Paul’s experience and understanding was truly really highlighted when he reminded us all, “Don’t make the fatal flaw of thinking that youth ministry is about is youth groups… It’s not the case that every parish must have a youth group but they must have youth ministry.”

The weekend wasn’t all about listening to talks - there were times for youth group planning, games, Mass, Adoration, Reconciliation and, of course, time to chat and eat. The weekend wrapped up with Mass celebrated by Bishop Mark Edwards OMI and he commissioned our new leaders for joyful and fruitful 2018.

The camp was a valuable opportunity for youth leaders to share knowledge with other youth leaders in the same position and learn new skills. “It helped me to identify what my true purpose was in youth ministry” Nicki (St Catherine of Siena, Caroline Springs).

The AOY looks forward to working with all the Archdiocese’s parishes and youth leaders in 2018’s Year of Youth. If you or your parish require any assistance in developing or growing your youth ministry, contact the team on 9287 5565 or aoy@cam.org.au.
