Statement Regarding World Youth Day 2019

CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF MELBOURNE

STATEMENT REGARDING WORLD YOUTH DAY 2019

In assessment of participation of attendance at World Youth Day 2019 Panama, a number of challenges have been identified which present pastoral, health, financial and leadership obstacles for the Archdiocese of Melbourne. In light of these and not without rigorous consideration, a decision has been reached that the Archdiocese of Melbourne will withdraw from leading a pilgrimage group.

The decision is disappointing as many young Catholics from Melbourne have been blessed to go on past pilgrimages and to have encountered the universal Church united with the Pope. This has provided a wonderful opportunity for the formation of young people through prayer, special events, pilgrimage, gathering for worship, reconciliation and outreach.

In announcing the withdrawal of Melbourne from attendance in Panama, the efforts of the Archdiocese will be committed to engage with agencies, parishes, schools, new movements, migrant communities, Catholic institutions and all the faithful to celebrate World Youth Day at home in unity with those who gather in Panama.  These efforts will be directed to the whole Archdiocese and will provide an opportunity for a spirit of renewal in union with the Universal Church and the Holy Father.

Young people of the Archdiocese of Melbourne who would like to join another pilgrimage to World Youth Day will find information at http://www.wydpanama2019.com.au/.
