What is World Youth Day?

World Youth Day is an international celebration of faith. Pope John Paul II established World Youth Day (WYD) in 1986. The first WYD was held on Palm Sunday in Rome and is celebrated on Palm Sunday every year in local dioceses. Every two to three years, WYD is taken to an international host city for a week-long series of events attended by the Pope and millions of young people from all over the world.

When and where will the next World Youth Day be held?

The next international WYD will be held in Panama from 22 January – 29 January 2019.

Why should I attend World Youth Day?

WYD offers something for everyone – from silent prayer to daily Mass, huge concerts to inspiring cultural events. At WYD, you will discover that you are not alone in your faith journey.  While the week is lots of fun, it is definitely a pilgrimage and not a holiday. On a WYD pilgrimage you can expect to live simply, form new friendships, gain new perspectives on Christian life, and experience deep encounters of faith.

How can I go to the next World Youth Day in Panama?

The Archdiocese of Melbourne and Dioceses of Ballarat invite young people aged 18-35 to join us on our way to WYD in Panama!

Why should I travel with the Victorian Pilgrimage?

The Victorian Pilgrimage will be investing significant resources to ensure that we provide a safe and spiritual journey to WYD. We are working with Cosmos travel company, who have been officially appointed by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference to coordinate our travel arrangements.  By travelling with the Victorian group you will be spared the hassles of trying to negotiate WYD by yourself, you will get to meet many young people from our dioceses, and be supported by inspiring chaplains and the experienced pilgrimage leadership team.

What if I am under 18?

The 2019 Victorian pilgrimage is open to pilgrims aged 18-35. If you are aged under 18, we encourage you to attend the next Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth, December 2019!

How can I register my interest in travelling to WYD with the Victorian Pilgrimage group?

Information for registering with the Victorian Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2019 will be available in early 2018. If you would like to express your interest in participating in the Victorian Pilgrimage as a pilgrim or group leader contact us at wyd2019@cam.org.au.

What if I want to travel with my own group?

We are encouraging all interested parish groups and movements in the Melbourne and Ballarat dioceses to join the Victorian Pilgrimage. By travelling with the Victorian pilgrimage you will by supported by the experienced team of leaders, chaplains, Cosmos staff and national support.

What if I want to go to World Youth Day by myself?

Going to WYD is more than just being present in the host city at the time of the event - it is about going on a pilgrimage! To get the most out of WYD it is recommended that you join an organised pilgrimage group. This will help you grow in your faith and form relationships with others in a community which can continue to support you when you return home.

How can I start preparing for the next World Youth Day?

  • PRAY that God will prepare you to receive the abundance of graces He wants to give you! WYD is a pilgrimage and the aim is to deepen the faith of all the Pilgrims. What better way to prepare than to start talking to God now!
  • Start SAVING and fundraising! Some young people have already started fundraising activities in their community to help off-set the costs associated with travelling to WYD. Why not connect with one of these groups to get some ideas or speak to your own Parish Priest about how your parish can support you. The Melbourne Archdiocesan Office for Youth produced a fundraising guide which you can download here
  • JOIN with others preparing to go. WYD is a pilgrimage best experienced with other young people. It is a spiritual pilgrimage for young people and so it helps to have peers to support you as you prepare for the journey. If you are part of a parish, start talking about the possibility of others in the community joining you and how the parish can support you.
