Let us hope that at the last minute this decision will be reconsidered and ideology will not completely blind consciences.”

The president emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Bishop Elio Sgreccia, criticised the practice of embryo selection this week and called it a “legitimisation of an abuse,” similar to euthanasia, and said the Church would continue to use “all peaceful means” to “educate society” to keep politicians from assuming the right to decide on matters of life and death.

Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, the President of the Pontifical Council of Health Care, has responded to reports that President-elect Obama's future administration will reverse a federal ban on human embryonic stem cell research funding. Saying that the stem cells produced by the destruction of embryos "serve no purpose," he argued that embryonic stem cell research has not resulted in any significant cures so far and was "good for nothing."
